British Council is delighted to announce an artisan in residence with Arts University Plymouth (AUP) in the run up to the conference, Making Futures 2024 in partnership with the Delhi Crafts Council.

For Making Futures 2024, the theme of the conference is “Beyond Objects” – and will take place in October. Making Futures 2024 will explore craft encounters with current material innovations where artists, artisans, designers and others work across disciplines and communities toward a more equitable, sustainable and resilient world.

As a part of the ongoing collaboration, British Council, Delhi Crafts Council and AUP are supporting an artisan-in-residence at AUP in the run up to the conference hosted within their textile laboratory. The residency will enable putting ‘making’ and ‘maker’ into the spotlight at the conference and the output of the residency will be showcased at the conference. The artisan in residence will bring a unique element of actual craft making to a conference that wants to explore newer ways of cultural production and exchange. It will focus on setting the stage for the larger narrative on artisan autonomy and academic contribution and knowledge exchange through practice.

We are delighted that the artisan – in – residence for this opportunity will be the celebrated textile expert, Shamji Vankar from Kutch. Shamji Vankar will be spending a month at Plymouth working with the student community and the textile laboratory developing his practice and presenting at the conference, facilitated and co anchored by designer and educator, Sachin Sachar.
