The UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) is the UK and India’s flagship bilateral collaboration programme on education and research.

By strengthening education and research collaboration between the UK and India, UKIERI helps both countries to achieve their knowledge ambitions. 

Founded in 2006, the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) has facilitated over 25,000 academic exchanges spanning 4,500 education institutions.

UKIERI has been implemented in three phases from 2006 to  2011, 2011 to 2016 and 2016 to 2022. The fourth phase of UKIERI was launched in 2023.

UKIERI Phase IV

UKIERI Phase 4 expects to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the UK and India in the areas of education, research, and innovation, while addressing shared global challenges and promoting sustainable development.

UKIERI Phase 4 will deliver multiple objectives of the India-UK Roadmap.

UKIERI Phase IV - Objectives

  • enhance UK-India research to develop sustainable solutions to global challenges, through increased institutional research and mobility partnerships
  • empower women through leadership development programmes for women in science and research
  • development a broader base of early career researchers, through innovative new approaches to talent development, with a focus on inclusivity and multidisciplinary exchange.

Grant announcement – Phase 4

The results of the UKIERI Phase 4 grant results are now out. Under this phase 34 new research grants have been awarded across 26 UK and 23 Indian HEIs.

The grants have been awarded in two areas at present.

Strand 1: Institutional Research and Mobility Partnerships

Twenty-three grants have been awarded in this category.
