Sheffield Hallam University is a leading knowledge-applied university in the north of England. The university’s TESOL centre aims to transform lives, support inclusive learning, and build international education and communication that works and empowers. Our MA TESOL is taught face to face on our Sheffield campus and lasts one year (from September to August). The course consists of core modules and elective ones that cover a wide range of teaching and learning aspects of TESOL. The teaching team are all highly experienced and research-active.

Choose from two specialist routes (Artificial Intelligence or Applied) and explore the latest issues from the relationship between humans and global technologies, natural language processing and the role of language in culture, society and professional contexts. Next start date October 2025. 

The MA Applied Linguistics and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) programme at the University of Portsmouth is an ideal course for teachers who want to progress their careers. You may want to advance into a specialisation such as assessment, materials writing, or teacher education – or you may just want to understand your own teaching practice in more detail, adding a sound theoretical underpinning to what you do. Through using the Professional Portfolio and Dissertation modules, the course can be tailored to your own particular interests. Teachers with less experience can substitute the Dissertation module for two practice-based modules. Whichever route you take, you will be supported by experts in their respective fields.

The course can be taken either through full-time (1 year) study, or part-time. We have both on campus and distance learning modes available, with start dates in September and January.
